Your grandmother's doily, a meter wide and made of light

Open it, that drawer. They are all still there.
Your grandmother's, or great-grandmother's, crochet doilies. Folded, yellowed at the edges, some still starched. No one has put them on furniture for twenty years. But you don't throw them away, because she made those, one stitch at a time, in front of the television or on the doorstep.
And so they stay there: too beautiful to throw away, too out of time to use.
There is a third way.
A DOILY IS ALREADY A DESIGN OF LIGHT
Take a doily and hold it against the light. What you see is lace made of solids and voids: dense threads where the pattern closes, air where it opens.
That is exactly how an illuminaria (light sculpture) works.
We stretch it over a 3D-printed frame, place low-energy LEDs behind it, and that design stops resting on a dresser: it projects onto the walls and ceiling of the room. The work your grandmother did by hand becomes the thing you look at when the other lights are turned off.
The larger the doily, the wider the halo. Over a meter in diameter, the effect is no longer just a piece of decor: it is the room that changes.
YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN, OR START FROM SCRATCH
There are two paths, and you can find both in the estimator.
You already have one. This is the best case. You send us the measurements of your doily, we build the frame to those exact dimensions, and we return the finished light to you. The doily remains yours: we don't cut it, we don't dye it, we don't ruin it.
You don't have one. Then we find one for you. And here we always recommend the same thing: a recovered antique doily. These are genuine pieces, handmade decades ago, with techniques that almost no one uses anymore. They cost up to 60% less than a new custom-made one, and they have a history inside that a newly made piece cannot have.
If, however, you have a specific design in mind, or need a size that doesn't exist, it can also be made new to measure.
ROUND OR SCALLOPED
The shape of the edge significantly changes the result.
The round one gives a clean and regular halo, a clear circle of light. The scalloped one, with its wavy edge, projects a jagged outline that looks like real lace on the walls.
There is no right choice: it depends on how yours is made, and how much you want it to be seen that it is a doily.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR DOILY
It is the only piece of information we need to get started, and it must be taken in a specific way.
A doily lying on a table is soft and bunches up: the measurement you read that way is not the one we need. It must be measured while stretched, because it will be stretched when it sits on the frame.

Stretch it from at least 4 opposite points, pulling evenly.

If it exceeds 50 cm, stretch it from 8 points: above that size, it takes very little to distort everything.

Measure the internal diameter while stretched, and send us that number.
The estimator does the rest: it calculates the working diameter, the total size of the structure including the frame, and above all how large the final light halo will be — which is the detail that usually surprises people, because the light spreads well beyond the edge.

It depends on three things: whether you bring the doily or we find it, the size, and the shape.

WHY WE CARE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
We do 3D printing. Everything that comes out of our workshop is born from a file.
Not this. This is born from something someone made by hand, perhaps fifty years ago, without imagining it would end up hanging on a wall casting light.
We print the frame ourselves in bioplastic derived from corn starch, and the technical part is ours. But the design—the thing you then see on the wall—we didn't make that. Your grandmother did.
It seems to us the best way to use a new technology: not to replace what was there before, but to put it back into circulation.
